Kon'nichiwa! Enrich your child’s creativity with influence from Japan. Artists will be inspired by a wide range of art styles, including ancient pottery, sculpture, ink painting and calligraphy.
Kintsugi Bowl - Known as golden joinery, students will create their own decorative air clay bowl with textures* then mend broken pieces with gold glue.
Shibori Fabric Dyeing- Considered a manual tye-dyeing technique, students will explore how to make patterns on fabric using string.
Sumi-e Painting - Better known as ink painting, students will create a bamboo scene with strokes varying in length and pressure.
Kirigami 3D Koi sculpture - This art form incorporates both folding and cutting of paper to create a 3D object. Students will create a 3D koi fish using various mediums.
Shodo Calligraphy - Students will learn basic stroke techniques by grinding ink
blocks into an ink stone, using a calligraphy brush.
Chigiri-e Collage - Translated torn paper, students will use torn pieces of paper to create a scene of Mt. Fuji.
Haiku Art - Referred to as poetry art, students will create their own short poem to harmonize with their art.
Positive peer reviews and other projects may be offered, as time permits.
*This project uses dried pasta to create texture, please note any gluten allergies in advance.
Students as young as 8 may register for this class if they meet the following criteria: techniques focus on slower, intentional movements using a brush, scissors, and other materials; students should be able to remain seated and not rush through their work.
