#42 Art goes to Japan!

Teaching Artist - Leigh Ferello
Week 4, 9 am - 12 pm
Ages 9 - 13
$225*

Kon'nichiwa! Enrich your child’s creativity with influence from Japan. Artists will be inspired by a wide range of art styles, including ancient pottery, sculpture, ink painting, and calligraphy. We will explore the art of Shibori Fabric Dyeing and make a decorative Kintsugi Bowl. Learn Sumi-e Painting, better known as ink painting, students will create a bamboo scene with strokes varying in length and pressure. Enjoy making a Kirigami 3D Koi sculpture. This art form incorporates both folding and cutting of paper to create a 3D object, while using various mediums. Try Shodo Calligraphy to learn the basic stroke techniques by grinding ink blocks into an ink stone, using a calligraphy brush. All material fees are included.

Notes: Techniques focus on slower, intentional movements using a brush, scissors, and other materials. Students should be able to remain seated and not rush through their work. Some projects use dried pasta to create texture, please note any gluten allergies in advance.

*plus $4 processing fee

"You learn a lot about a community by how much it embraces, elevates and provides access to the arts. AOY Art Center, a nonprofit artistic hub on Mirror Lake Road, provides countless opportunities for residents to embrace their artistic side as a vehicle for growth, creativity, and profound joy. Through adult classes, youth programs, and public events, AOY Art Center uses the arts to not only inspire community members but also connect them to one another."
