This session of Hello Dali! Surrealist Class we’ll be focusing our attention on fashion model turned war correspondent Lee Miller. Miller was a fashion model in New York City in the 1920s before going to Paris and becoming a fashion and fine art photographer. During World War II she was a war correspondent for Vogue magazine covering events such as the London Blitz, the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau. While in Paris she immersed herself with the Surrealist, especially photographer Man Ray where she became his muse, lover, and collaborator. Using Lee Miller photography as inspiration the class will learn how to train their eye to see their daily lives through a surrealistic lens and identify and photograph settings during their day that can be used for a painting. The following painting assignment will focus on composition where the students will be asked to arrange an environment or set-up a still life that has the characteristics that define surrealist art. The class promises to awaken your curiosity and approach to art making and how it relates to everyday life. This is primarily an acrylic painting class but oil painters are welcomed. Improving mixing and painting techniques will be demonstrated. The majority of art supplies are the responsibility of the student. Materials will be discussed in class and a list will be provided.

For adults, all levels. Beginning with the basics, students will delve into different aspects of oil painting each week and move ahead at their own pace. Handouts will give information, but the real learning happens when you are painting and that will be the goal. Landscape will be the focus, but a Still Life will be provided for those interested. When working indoors students will work from sketches and photos. But if weather permits, those who would like to (and have their own equipment) can paint outside on the beautiful Art Center grounds (en plein air). Students will learn about supplies, design, value, shape, color, texture, and more. A supply list will be provided.
